The DVUSD Championships took place on Monday the 15th and Wednesday the 17th at Sandra Day O’Connor High School. On Monday, they held the prelims for the sprint events (100m, 200m, 400m), half of the field events, and half of the distance track events. Wednesday capped of the district meet with the finals in the sprinting events, relays, and the remaining field and distance events.
Top Field Performers:
Misael Colon Torres – On Monday, Colon Torres placed 2nd in the long jump with a personal best of 19’5”. On Wednesday, he won 1st place in the pole vault by a foot and a half. After clinching the win, he cleared 12’7” for a new personal best.
Luis Martinez-Lugo – Martinez-Lugo placed 5th in the long jump with a mark of 19’0”.
Rascheed Sterling Jr. and Kenny Neil – Despite not being high jump specialist, both Sterling and Neil finished in a 4-way tie for 4th place at a height of 5’6”.
Andjela Calic – On Monday, Calic jumped a personal best of 30’4” in the triple jump. On Wednesday, she placed 8th in the long jump at 13’5”.
Top Track Performers:
Suraia Amer – On Monday, Amer qualified for the finals in both the 100m and 200m, and was the fastest freshman amongst the 5 schools in both events. She placed 7th in the 100m finals and 5th in the 200m finals.
Alexis Lafuente – Lafuente qualified for finals in the 200m and 400m. In Wednesday’s finals, she placed 8th in the 200m and 5th in the 400m.
Rascheed Sterling Jr. – Sterling qualified for finals in the 100m and 200m, and placed 8th in the finals for both events.
