Senior pole vault specialist Misael Colon Torres is likely to earn a spot in the AIA Division II State Championships on May 1st and 4th at Mesa Community College. In order to qualify for the state meet, athletes must either meet the automatic qualification mark or meet the provisional mark and be ranked high enough in the state. For pole vault, the cut off is 24 competitors. Even though he did not meet the automatic qualification mark of 13’0″, he has met the provisional qualification mark and his season best of 12’7″ ranks him 8th overall in Division II. He will officially qualify following the completion of the “last chance” meets this week, assuming he remains in the top 24.
As they enter the final week of competition, the 24th ranked pole vaulter is at 11’3″, which is the provisional mark for qualification. Goldwater Track & Field is not competing at a last chance invitational, and Colon Torres is the only athlete anticipating an invitation to the state meet.
